I am fascinated with wood and with movement, having had a life-long enchantment with all kinds of objects that move. From toys to massive kinetic installations, from the whimsical to the deadly serious; I am exploring how to change the prevailing attitude that art is not to be physically handled.
This infatuation is leading me to make sculpture that is playful yet is more than a plaything. In particular, I want my sculptures to abolish the invisible wall between “The Viewer” and “The Art” by encouraging touch and direct interaction with the pieces.
I’m beginning to work on a larger scale, combining materials that provide a different textural context than wood alone (such as glass, metal, wire and fabric). Recently, I began a series incorporating lighting as well as kinetics and will be investigating how movement can be enhanced by light and shadow.
